Sofas and chairs in a home often see a lot of love and use, and thus show soil and dirt quickly. Even if you are not concerned about stains on your upholstery, what about the dirt you can’t see? ServiceMaster upholstery cleaning is a multi step process geared to remove dirt, spots and stains while extending the life of your furniture.

To ensure the best cleaning while still protecting your upholstery, ServiceMaster uses a detailed process that is evaluated at every step.

During the ServiceMaster upholstered furniture cleaning, the following steps are performed. A technician will conduct a preliminary inspection of your upholstery to determine the best cleaning method. The furniture is vacuumed to remove dry loose soil from the upholstery. We pre-treat spots and stains using our proprietary cleaning products to accelerate soil release. The upholstery is rinse-extracted using high performance truck mounted equipment or portable extractors. This rinse-extraction process uses a specially formulated pH-balancing fiber rinse that helps to remove the cleaning solution residue. If the pre-treatment doesn’t remove all spots, we use various techniques in an attempt to remove them. In cases where odor control is an issue, deodorizing agent is applied at this point of the cleaning. Just like with carpet cleaning, fabric protector will help protect your furniture from stains from spills and dirt, dust and oils shed on it during regular use. It does this by keeping spots and spills on the surface to give you a chance to clean them. This can stop a spot or spill from becoming a permanent stain. If using fabric protector, it is applied at this point in the upholstery cleaning process.

After the technician completes the upholstery cleaning, we recommend you allow drying time of at least one to six hours depending on the cleaning method used before you use the furniture, allow pets or kids to get on the furniture or store any items on the furniture.

There are steps that can be taken to maintain your newly cleaned furniture. The key to keeping them beautiful is to protect the fabric. A few other tips for maintaining your upholstered furniture between cleanings include:

Use these tips like avoiding direct sunlight to protect your fabric between ServiceMaster upholstery cleanings.

Protect your furniture between cleanings to extend the life of your upholstery.

· Avoid direct sunlight. Modern furniture fabrics are usually very resilient to sunlight. However, under extreme exposure, even these fabrics show signs of fading. Use curtains or window treatments if needed to block the sun when shining directly on your furniture if it needs to remain in that spot.

· Plump up cushions often. Filling loses its ability to bounce back if not plumped up regularly. Plumping cushions will help them last longer. Plumping should be done every time you rotate cushions, and at least once in between rotations. Plump your cushions more often if needed.

· Rotate cushions often. Cushions that are not rotated may experience premature and unnecessary wear.

· Vacuum. Upholstered furniture should be vacuumed on a regular basis to remove dust and loose dirt. Weekly vacuuming of the surface area and monthly vacuuming under the cushions in the framing will keep your furniture protected from buildup of dust, dirt and that collection of items that got lost in the cushions.

· Clean spots and spills quickly, as fresh stains are easier to remove.

· To remove a spill, blot liquids with a dry, white absorbent cloth or plain white paper towels. Do not use prints or colored towels to avoid having them bleed color onto your upholstery.

· Start at the outside of the spot and continue toward the center to prevent the stain from spreading. Continue blotting until the area is barely damp. Semisolids, like food spills, may need to be scooped up with a spoon. Solid, dried bits can be vacuumed up. Warning: do not scrub or use a brush. Scrubbing and brushes can damage the upholstery as wells as spreading the stain to a larger area.

Pretest any cleaners on a hidden area and always follow product directions carefully to protect your upholstery.

· Pretest your chosen cleaner on a hidden area of your upholstery. Since manufacturers change their formula periodically, this should be performed each time you buy a new bottle of your preferred cleaner.

· Follow the product’s directions carefully. Apply a small amount of the cleaner or white vinegar to a white cloth and work in gently, from the edges to the center. Blot; don’t scrub. Never use a brush. You may need to do this several times to remove the spot.

To keep your upholstery in good condition, we recommend they be cleaned every 12 months.
